P04 - Driving Learning Innovation with Human-Centered Design Thinking
Design thinking has become an extremely popular buzzword amongst learning professionals. Learning professionals have many problems to solve: stakeholders demanding shiny new training solutions, no clear understanding or alignment to business goals, absent SMEs, templatized one-size-fits all learning solutions, lack of freedom for innovation, disengaged learners, and more. We try to solve all these problems, usually unsuccessfully. Most design thinking in the learning and development field is focused on just the learning solution at hand, many times missing the opportunity to use it as a method to drive innovation and gain stakeholder backing.
In this one-day, interactive human-centered design workshop you will productize your learning solutions, take a macro view of the learning experiences you create, and explore their impacts on the economics of learning within your organization. You'll be equipped with the tools you need to come up with innovative strategies and ideas that reach far beyond your immediate learning development projects. You will expand your scope to align with business goals and get a grip on your real customer's problems and challenges in order to create innovative learning experiences that provide the greatest impact. Throughout the day you’ll work in small, collaborative groups to create a "how might we improve” scenario; map out the complete learner and stakeholder experiences start to end; identify each customer's pain points, challenges, and problems; spitball ideas and solutions; select and pitch your best ideas; and finally build low-fi prototypes of the ideas generated. The end result of this workshop is the development of a complete reusable toolkit and applicable knowledge to drive innovation and create impactful learning experiences that align with both the business and learner's needs.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to develop an immediately applicable problem-solving approach to address existing and new projects and challenge in any area of professional lives
- How to challenge assumptions and create a recipe for innovation
- Develop creative thinking techniques that can be used to gain executive-level confidence
- Build an easy-to-use, human-centered design thinking toolkit that can be shared within your own organization to drive creativity and innovation
